“A Little Sign Language Goes a Long Way!” ~ Rachel Coleman
Whether as an early communication tool for children before they speak, a form of communication for those with special needs, deafness, or hearing impairments, or as a fun, hands-on second language for children and adults of all ages….we hope you’ll learn some signs with us!
Sign and Doodle offers innovative American Sign Language classes that embrace the benefits of teaching ASL vocabulary to infants, toddlers, and children. At Sign and Doodle sign language and fine motor skills go hand in hand! Sign language increases fine motor skills, awareness of how to use hands purposefully, and the concept of meaningful communication. In return, fine motor developing activities increase a child’s ability to properly position hands to more correctly form the ASL signs. Classes are open to children of ALL ability levels.Enrollment is easy! 1.) Check our website for class schedule 2013 – 2014 2.) Contact us to reserve your spot, pay $20 material fee 3.) Sign language appeals to visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners, you will be surprised at how quickly your child will learn new signs! Incorporating signs into everyday learning will appeal to all learning styles and speed up the rate at which it takes your child to develop skills. When they see the sign, see the written word, hear the word, and do the sign, it is more effective than teaching a concept using just one learning style.
During the expanded Early Enrichment class, students will also learn to sign a letter of the week, and practice finger spelling words that start with that letter. Students will participate in fine motor activities that will incorporate letter awareness, tool use, and strengthen muscles needed to eventually write. Students will complete activities using crayons and markers which will prepare them for writing letters and teach them the vocabulary used in the Fundanoodle handwriting tablets. They will also practice making all 26 uppercase, lowercase, or cursive letters. Older students will begin creative writing. Each student will work from the Fundanoodle Activity Book of their level, with additional instruction during class and practice assignments for home use. By the end of the session each child will write, illustrate, and sign their very own book! Student’s may choose to read and sign their books during the end of year Sing and Sign celebration!
